In today's fast-paced digital age, where misinformation and fake news spread like wildfire, finding truth can feel like an insurmountable challenge. We live in a post-truth world where objective facts are often overshadowed by personal beliefs and biases. But amidst the chaos, there is a surprising way to navigate through the noise and uncover the truth.

Understanding the Post-Truth World

In order to navigate the post-truth world, we must first understand what it means. The term "post-truth" refers to a cultural and political landscape in which truth and facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief. This phenomenon has been further exacerbated by the rise of social media and the ease with which misinformation spreads.

In a post-truth world, it is not uncommon to see viral stories that have little to no basis in truth being shared and spread by millions. These stories often tap into people's emotions, confirming their existing beliefs, and creating echo chambers where alternative perspectives are actively dismissed.

The Impact of Confirmation Bias

Confirmation bias, the tendency to seek out and interpret information that confirms our preexisting beliefs, plays a significant role in the post-truth world. Instead of critically evaluating information and seeking objective facts, we are drawn to sources that reinforce our existing opinions. This leads to a dangerous cycle of misinformation and reinforces our biases.

Confirmation bias affects our judgment in multiple areas of life, from political and religious beliefs to personal relationships and beyond. It clouds our ability to objectively understand the world, making it even harder to find the truth amidst the noise.

The Importance of Critical Thinking

In a world filled with misinformation, critical thinking becomes an essential tool for finding truth. Critical thinking involves questioning and evaluating information, analyzing sources, considering alternative viewpoints, and applying logic and reasoning to come to well-informed s.

When faced with a piece of information, it is crucial to ask critical questions such as: Who is the source? What evidence is provided? Is there any bias present? By developing critical thinking skills, we can separate fact from fiction and recognize when our biases might be clouding our judgment.

Fact-Checking and Reliable Sources

To combat the spread of misinformation, fact-checking has emerged as an invaluable tool. Fact-checking organizations extensively analyze claims and statements made by individuals, politicians, and media outlets to determine their veracity. Utilizing fact-checking websites and resources can help us identify when information is misleading or outright false.

Additionally, it is essential to rely on reliable and reputable sources when seeking the truth. Mainstream media outlets, academic journals, and reputable research institutions often uphold high standards of fact-checking and accuracy. These sources provide a more reliable foundation for understanding the world around us.

Beyond Echo Chambers

To escape the echo chambers that contribute to the post-truth era, we must be open to different perspectives and actively engage with information that challenges our preexisting beliefs. Diversifying our sources of information and seeking out views that differ from our own can lead to a more well-rounded understanding of complex issues.

Engaging in respectful discussions and debates can also help uncover the truth. By listening to different viewpoints and presenting evidence-based arguments, we can foster an environment where the truth has a better chance of prevailing.

In a post-truth world, finding truth may seem like an impossible task, but with the right approach, it is attainable. By cultivating critical thinking skills, fact-checking information, relying on reliable sources, and actively seeking diverse perspectives, we can navigate through the noise and uncover the truth. Remember, truth is not always easy to find, but it is always worth the effort.

Common sense is the foundation of thinking and of human action. It is the indispensable basis for making our way in the world as individuals and in community with others, and the starting point for finding truth and building scientific knowledge. The philosophy of common-sense realism deeply informed the American Founders’ vision for a self-governing people, in a society where leaders and average citizens share essentially the same understanding of reality—of what simply makes sense.

But today our confidence in the value and reliability of common sense has been badly shaken. Deep thinkers have rejected it. Elites have learned to disdain it. We’re told that we have moved into a more sophisticated world, where common sense is passé and the very concept of truth is outmoded. Indeed, the Oxford Dictionaries selected “post-truth” as the Word of the Year for 2016.

Do we actually live in a post-truth reality? Have we moved beyond common sense? Can we?

In this book, Robert Curry exposes the absurdity of the attacks on common sense, and demonstrates that we still live and move in the realm of common sense in our every waking moment. Drawing from philosophy and literature, science and psychiatry, Reclaiming Common Sense helps us regain our trust in the “superpower” we all have in common, while reminding us that we cannot get along without it.
