Afghanistan halong been kon as the graveyard of empires. The recent withdrawal of US forces after 20 years of conflict and the subsequent regime change in favor of the Afghan Taliban only reinforced this idea. Foreign invasions have not only been costly for the invading powers, but they have also been the primary cause of Afghanistan’s poor development and progress (Strand, Borchgrevink, and Harpviken 2021). The 2001 US invasion of Afghanistan was different from other military conquests of the country. It was a protracted conflict that lasted two decades. The dramatic scenes that came out of Kabul Airport on the day the Taliban took over the capital summed up the consequences of American military action in the country. People flooding the airport in a mass exodus while clinging on to aircraft wings to find a way out of the war-torn country painted a grim picture of the country’s future. With the Taliban in charge, the country was pushed back to pre-invasion political order. Worst still, the country was left with plenty of problems that might be there before the invasion but were most certainly worsened by it. With an aid-dependent economy, threatened human rights under Taliban, shabby education system, daunting refugee problem, and baggage of two decades of conflict, Afghanistan is in a worse position than it was before the Americans decided to invade the country. While the Americans have fled the crime scene, they have once again left the people of Afghanistan on their own. Not only do people of Afghanistan have to battle for their rights under the tribal Taliban government, but they must also fix the social and economic mess that has been created due to the protracted conflict in their homeland. The abandoned people of Afghanistan reveal the true nature of the tall claim (to liberate them from the tyranny of Taliban) that was often used by the US as a pretext to continue its military presence in the country.
