In the 1970s, the United States experienced a significant rise in black politics, driven by the pervasive violence and injustice faced by African Americans. This article explores the historical context, key events, and influential figures that contributed to this transformative period in American history.

Understanding the Historical Context

To comprehend the rise of black politics, it's essential to acknowledge the long-standing history of racial discrimination and systemic oppression faced by African Americans. From slavery to segregation, black individuals consistently faced violence and injustice throughout the nation, denying them access to fundamental rights and opportunities. The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s established a foundation for change, but the fight was far from over.

The Catalysts for Change

The 1970s witnessed several crucial events that intensified the black community's push for political empowerment. The assassinations of prominent civil rights leaders, such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, left a void that demanded new voices to step forward and carry the torch. Simultaneously, ongoing police brutality incidents, including the infamous case of the Attica Prison uprising, exposed the systemic racism ingrained within law enforcement institutions.

Emerging Influential Figures

This era saw the emergence of influential figures who played a key role in shaping black politics, demanding justice, and advocating for equal rights. Angela Davis, with her activism against racial oppression and involvement in the Black Panther Party, became a revered symbol of resistance. Shirley Chisholm made history as the first African American woman elected to Congress and later as a presidential candidate, inspiring countless individuals to engage in politics.

Legislative Transformations

The rise of black politics in the 1970s also led to significant legislative transformations. Affirmative action policies were implemented to address historical disadvantages faced by African Americans, promoting equal opportunities in employment and education. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was expanded to further safeguard the voting rights of minority communities, empowering individuals to have a say in the political landscape.

Impact on Political Representation

The increased involvement of black politicians and activists worked towards diversifying political representation. Mayors like Carl Stokes and Richard G. Hatcher broke barriers by becoming the first black mayors of major U.S. cities. The Congressional Black Caucus grew in influence, advocating for policies aimed at improving the lives of African Americans and other marginalized communities.

Legacy and Ongoing Struggles

While the progress made by black politics in the 1970s was significant, the fight against violence and injustice remains ongoing. The legacy of this era serves as a reminder of the power of collective action and the necessity to continue addressing racial inequalities in all aspects of society.

The 1970s marked a pivotal period in American history when violence, injustice, and the desire for political empowerment coalesced to propel the rise of black politics. Through the tireless efforts of influential figures, legislative transformations, and increased political representation, the black community embarked on a journey towards greater equality. However, the struggles persist, emphasizing the need for continuous engagement and the pursuit of justice.

In February 1971, racial tension surrounding school desegregation in Wilmington, North Carolina, culminated in four days of violence and skirmishes between white vigilantes and black residents. The turmoil resulted in two deaths, six injuries, more than $500,000 in damage, and the firebombing of a white-owned store, before the National Guard restored uneasy peace. Despite glaring irregularities in the subsequent trial, ten young persons were convicted of arson and conspiracy and then sentenced to a total of 282 years in prison. They became known internationally as the Wilmington Ten. A powerful movement arose within North Carolina and beyond to demand their freedom, and after several witnesses admitted to perjury, a federal appeals court, also citing prosecutorial misconduct, overturned the convictions in 1980.

Kenneth Janken narrates the dramatic story of the Ten, connecting their story to a larger arc of Black Power and the transformation of post-Civil Rights era political organizing. Grounded in extensive interviews, newly declassified government documents, and archival research, this book thoroughly examines the 1971 events and the subsequent movement for justice that strongly influenced the wider African American freedom struggle.
