A British Legacy: Setting the Stage for Conflict
In the aftermath of World War I, the League of Nations granted Britain the Mandate for Palestine, setting the stage for a complex series of events. The Balfour Declaration: A Turning Point
In 1917, the Balfour Declaration was issued, expressing British support for the establishment of a "national home for the Jewish people" in Palestine. This declaration sparked enthusiasm among Jewish communities worldwide, while raising concerns among Palestinians who feared losing their land and rights.
Arab Revolt and the Peel Commission
The Arab Revolt of 1936-1939 marked a significant turning point in the conflict. As dissatisfaction with British rule grew, an uprising began against both the British authorities and Jewish immigration. The resulting violence prompted the British government to establish the Peel Commission, which recommended partitioning Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states to address the competing national aspirations. However, the proposed partition plan was rejected by both sides.
The UN Partition Plan and Israeli Independence
After much deliberation, the United Nations proposed a partition plan in 1947 to resolve the ongoing conflict. The plan recommended dividing Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states, with Jerusalem to be under international administration. While Jewish leaders accepted this proposal, the Arab states rejected it.
Israeli War of Independence
Following the rejection of the UN partition plan, tensions escalated, leading to the Israeli War of Independence in 1948. Arab-Israeli militias clashed, resulting in a victory for the Israeli forces. As a consequence, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled or were expelled, leading to what is known as the Palestinian exodus or Nakba, meaning "catastrophe" in Arabic.
The Aftermath: Occupation, Intifadas, and Peace Process
After the establishment of the State of Israel, the West Bank and Gaza Strip fell under Jordanian and Egyptian control, respectively. The occupation of these territories deepened the Palestinian struggle for self-determination and the desire for an independent state.
The First and Second Intifadas
In 1987, the First Intifada erupted, a widespread Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation. The intifada marked a pivotal moment in Palestinian history, as it led to increased international attention and recognition of the Palestinian cause. It was followed by the Second Intifada in 2000, characterized by a wave of violence and terrorism.
The Oslo Accords and the Peace Process
Efforts towards peace began with the Oslo Accords, signed between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in 1993. These agreements aimed to establish a framework for negotiations and the creation of a Palestinian state. While they brought some limited autonomy to Palestinians, the peace process faced numerous setbacks, leaving crucial issues unresolved.
The Present-Day Conflict and Hopes for the Future
The history of modern Palestine has left an indelible mark on the region and the world. The ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict continues to evoke intense emotions and elicit international scrutiny. Amidst the challenges and complexities, there are those working tirelessly towards a peaceful resolution, hoping to create a brighter future for both Israelis and Palestinians.
So, now that you have learned the untold history of modern Palestine, take a moment to reflect on the struggles, aspirations, and hopes that define this nation. Share this article with your friends and keep exploring the world's captivating history!

Ilan Pappe's book traces the history of Palestine from the Ottomans in the nineteenth century, through the British Mandate, the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, and the subsequent wars and conflicts which have dominated this troubled region. The second edition of Pappe's book has been updated to include the dramatic events of the 1990s and the early twenty-first century. These years, which began with a sense of optimism, as the Oslo peace accord was being negotiated, culminated in the second intifada and the increase of militancy on both sides. Pappe explains the reasons for the failure of Oslo and the two-state solution, and reflects upon life thereafter as the Palestinians and Israelis battle it out under the shadow of the wall of separation. As in the first edition, it is the men, women and children of Palestine who are at the centre of Pappe's narrative.
