The Evolution of Power in Late Ottoman Egypt

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Egypt was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. During this time, the ideology and culture of power underwent significant transformations that shaped the country's history. Understanding these shifts is essential for comprehending the socio-political landscape during that era.

The Ottoman Empire and Its Influence

The Ottoman Empire, with its central power structure, played a crucial role in shaping the ideology of power in Egypt. As a part of the empire, Egyptian political and social institutions were influenced by the Ottoman ruling elite. The empire's governance style, incorporating both religious and administrative aspects, had a profound impact on Egyptian society.

The Rise of Nationalism and the Young Turks

In the late 19th century, nationalist sentiments started to gain traction in Egypt. This growing sense of Egyptian identity challenged the traditional Ottoman power dynamics. Simultaneously, the Young Turks movement emerged in the Ottoman Empire, advocating for a more inclusive and reformist approach to governance. This movement further contributed to the changes in the ideology of power in Egypt.

A Shift Towards Modernization

As the 20th century unfolded, Egypt experienced a significant shift towards modernization. The ruling elite, influenced by Western ideologies and eager to assert their dominance, embraced reforms that aimed to modernize Egyptian society. These reforms often clashed with traditional values, leading to tensions within the culture of power.

The Role of World War I

World War I marked a turning point in the ideology and culture of power in late Ottoman Egypt. The Ottoman Empire's alliance with Germany put Egypt in a precarious position. British forces occupied the country, which resulted in increased British influence and control. This occupation further catalyzed nationalist sentiments and fueled the drive towards independence.

The Emergence of Political Parties

During this period, political parties began to gain prominence in Egypt. British occupation had created an environment that fostered political activism and the formation of organized political groups. These parties represented various ideologies, including nationalist, liberal, and socialist, which influenced the discourse around power in Egypt.

The Legacy of Power Shifts in Late Ottoman Egypt

The power shifts and ideological transformations that took place in late Ottoman Egypt left a lasting impact on the country's history. The legacy of this era includes the emergence of nationalist movements, the struggle for independence, and the eventual end of Ottoman rule in Egypt. Understanding this history provides valuable insights into the socio-political dynamics of modern Egypt.

The Ideology And Culture Of Power: An Unforgettable Era

The ideology and culture of power in late Ottoman Egypt were at the epicenter of political, social, and cultural changes. From the influence of the Ottoman Empire to the rise of nationalism and the impact of World War I, this era shaped Egypt's path towards independence and modernity. How the support of patriotic sentiments in Ottoman Egypt led to an emerging Arab nationalism

Arab Patriotism presents the essential backstory to the formation of the modern nation-state and mass nationalism in the Middle East. While standard histories claim that the roots of Arab nationalism emerged in opposition to the Ottoman milieu, Adam Mestyan points to the patriotic sentiment that grew in the Egyptian province of the Ottoman Empire during the nineteenth century, arguing that it served as a pivotal way station on the path to the birth of Arab nationhood.

Through extensive archival research, Mestyan examines the collusion of various Ottoman elites in creating this nascent sense of national belonging and finds that learned culture played a central role in this development. Mestyan investigates the experience of community during this period, engendered through participation in public rituals and being part of a theater audience. He describes the embodied and textual ways these experiences were produced through urban spaces, poetry, performances, and journals. From the Khedivial Opera House's staging of Verdi's Aida and the first Arabic magazine to the ‘Urabi revolution and the restoration of the authority of Ottoman viceroys under British occupation, Mestyan illuminates the cultural dynamics of a regime that served as the precondition for nation-building in the Middle East.

A wholly original exploration of Egypt in the context of the Ottoman Empire, Arab Patriotism sheds fresh light on the evolving sense of political belonging in the Arab world.
