The Historical Context

The dynamics of labor and the fight for rights have played a critical role in shaping human societies throughout history. From the sixteenth to the early twentieth centuries in Eurasia, numerous events unfolded, marking significant milestones in the quest for labor rights and improved working conditions.

Exploitative Labor Systems

Throughout this period, various labor systems were prevalent in Eurasia, some of which were highly exploitative. For example, the emergence of serfdom in Russia during the sixteenth century resulted in widespread forced labor and limited legal protections for serfs. The Ottoman Empire also employed a similar system, known as the "Devshirme," which involved conscripting young boys from Christian families into military and administrative roles.

Revolutionary Movements

The nineteenth and early twentieth centuries witnessed the rise of revolutionary movements across Eurasia, driven by discontent with oppressive labor conditions. The Industrial Revolution brought significant changes, as factories sprouted across the continent, attracting a massive influx of rural workers. The formation of labor unions and the rise of socialist ideologies became prominent features of this era.

Russian Revolution of 1917

The magnitude of labor and rights struggles in Eurasia is exemplified by the Russian Revolution of 1917. The widespread discontent among workers and peasants against the oppressive Tsarist regime led to a series of uprisings. This revolution eventually resulted in the overthrow of the monarchy and the establishment of the Soviet Union, with significant implications for labor rights and social equality.

Labor Laws and Reforms

The struggles endured by workers and social movements led to the emergence of labor laws and reforms in various parts of Eurasia. In countries like Russia, these reforms aimed to improve working conditions, establish minimum wages, and ensure fair treatment of workers. However, the implementation of these laws was often complex and faced resistance from powerful elites.

Women in the Labor Force

An important aspect of the labor and rights movement in Eurasia was the participation of women in the workforce. As industrialization progressed, more women entered factory jobs, challenging traditional gender roles. These women not only fought for labor rights but also played a crucial role in advocating for gender equality and expanding opportunities for future generations.

Legacy and ongoing struggles

The labor and rights struggles in Eurasia during this era continue to have a lasting impact on society. The fight for workers' rights and improved labor conditions laid the foundation for modern labor laws and regulations in many countries. However, challenges persist, with new forms of exploitation emerging and ongoing battles for fair wages, decent working hours, and safe working environments still being fought.

For the first time, this book provides the global history of labor in Central Eurasia, Russia, Europe, and the Indian Ocean between the sixteenth and the twentieth centuries. It contests common views on free and unfree labor, and compares the latter to many Western countries where wage conditions resembled those of domestic servants. This gave rise to extreme forms of dependency in the colonies, not only under slavery, but also afterwards in form of indentured labor in the Indian Ocean and obligatory labor in Africa. Stanziani shows that unfree labor and forms of economic coercion were perfectly compatible with market development and capitalism, proven by the consistent economic growth that took place all over Eurasia between the seventeenth and the nineteenth centuries. This growth was labor intensive: commercial expansion, transformations in agriculture, and the first industrial revolution required more labor, not less. Finally, Stanziani demonstrates that this world did not collapse after the French Revolution or the British industrial revolution, as is commonly assumed, but instead between 1870 and 1914, with the second industrial revolution and the rise of the welfare state.
