Gustavus Adolphus, the Lion of North, was one of the greatest military commanders of all time.

Through the course of the Thirty Years War he led Sweden to become of the great powers of Europe.

By the early seventeenth century the Swedish army had developed into a superb military machine, with good weapons, excellent training, effective field artillery, and was backed by an efficient government that could provide much needed funds and supplied.

Under the leadership of Adolphus, the Swedes were able to smash the armies of their Catholic foes and shape the future of the European continent.

It is little wonder that experts of military history, such as Theodore Aryault Dodge, have stated that Adolphus was the “father of modern warfare.”

Dodge’s book, Gustavus Adolphus, is a brilliant account of this remarkable, but much under studied, military figure that explores his life and career and explains how he was able to revolutionize warfare through the course of his reign.

Yet as the subtitle to Dodge’s book highlights, this work also provides insight into how warfare developed from the end of the medieval period through to the beginning of the eighteenth century.

It contains, beside the campaigns of the Swedish king, and of his famous opponents Wallenstein and Tilly who fought for the Catholic League, those of Cromwell, Turenne, Condé, Marlborough, Prince Eugene, Charles XII., and other great early modern generals.

“Colonel Dodge’s book is a comprehensive history of the principal military changes and events which took place in Europe in consequence of the invention of printing, the s of gunpowder, and the Reformation.” The American Historical Review

Theodore Ayrault Dodge was an American officer and military historian. He fought as a Union officer in the American Civil War; as a writer, he was devoted to both the Civil War and the great generals of ancient and European history. Gustavus Adolphus was first published in 1895 and Dodge passed away in 1909.
