War is often thought of as a brutal affair, with its violence and destruction leaving scars on both the physical and human landscape. However, in wartime Asia, a region that witnessed some of the most horrific conflicts in history, the atrocities committed surpass even the most vivid imaginations. In this article, we delve into the dark secrets of murder, mayhem, and torture that plagued Asia during times of war.

1. The Rape of Nanking

The Rape of Nanking remains one of the most infamous chapters in the history of war crimes. In 1937, the Imperial Japanese Army invaded Nanking, the then-capital of China. What followed was a six-week reign of terror, where soldiers engaged in widespread rape, murder, and looting. Estimates put the number of victims between 200,000 and 300,000. The incident shocked the world and symbolizes the extreme brutality of war.

2. Unit 731: Human Experimentation

Unit 731 was a covert biological and chemical warfare research unit of the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. The unit conducted gruesome human experimentation on thousands of innocent victims, including live dissections, vivisections without anesthesia, and infecting subjects with deadly diseases. The extent of their atrocities only came to light after the war, highlighting the depths of human cruelty.

3. The Bataan Death March

The Bataan Death March took place in April 1942, after the surrender of the American and Filipino soldiers to the Japanese forces during World War II. Over 70,000 prisoners of war were forced to march over 60 miles through treacherous conditions, resulting in countless deaths due to physical abuse, starvation, and diseases. The march symbolizes the horrors endured by those captured during wartime.

4. Comfort Women: Forced Sexual Slavery

The comfort women, also known as "sexual slaves," were women and girls who were forced into sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. Estimates suggest that up to 200,000 women from various countries, including Korea, China, and the Philippines, were subjected to sexual abuse and violence. The stories of the comfort women are a painful reminder of the widespread sexual exploitation that occurred during wartime.

5. The Killing Fields of Cambodia

The Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia, led by Pol Pot, orchestrated one of the deadliest genocides in history between 1975 and 1979. The regime's aim was to establish a classless agrarian society, resulting in the execution of intellectuals, political opponents, and even individuals suspected of minor crimes. It is estimated that between 1.7 to 2.5 million people were killed, representing a quarter of Cambodia's population at the time.

6. The Nanjing Massacre

The Nanjing Massacre, also known as the Massacre of Nanjing, occurred during the Sino-Japanese War in 1937. The Imperial Japanese Army captured Nanjing (Nanking) and subjected the city to widespread looting, arson, rape, and murder. The exact number of victims is disputed, but it is believed that hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians and disarmed soldiers were killed in one of the bloodiest episodes of the war in Asia.

7. The Kwai River Bridge: The Bridge Over the River Kwai

The construction of the Kwai River Bridge in present-day Thailand during World War II by forced labor, including prisoners of war, resulted in thousands of deaths. The harsh working conditions, lack of food, and constant beatings took a toll on the laborers. The bridge's story gained international attention through the novel and subsequent film, "The Bridge on the River Kwai," which shed light on the brutal reality faced by those involved in its construction.

Exploring the dark history of murder, mayhem, and torture in wartime Asia serves as a reminder of the extreme depths humanity can sink to during times of conflict. These horrifying episodes, from the Rape of Nanking to the atrocities committed by Unit 731, should never be forgotten. By acknowledging the past, we can strive to prevent the repetition of such horrific acts and work towards a more peaceful future.

From the author of Children of the Camps, a look at the disturbing activities of the Kempeitai, Japan’s feared military and secret police.

The book opens by explaining the origins, organization, and roles of the Kempeitai apparatus, which exercised virtually unlimited power throughout the Japanese Empire. Author Mark Felton reveals their criminal and collaborationist networks that extorted huge sums of money from hapless citizens and businesses. They ran the Allied POW gulag system that treated captives with merciless and murderous brutality. Other Kempeitai activities included biological and chemical experiments on live subjects, the Maruta vivisection campaign, and widespread slave labor, including “Comfort Women” drawn from all races. Their record of reprisals against military and civilians was unrelenting. For example, Colonel Doolittle’s raid on Tokyo in 1942 resulted in a campaign of revenge not just against captured airmen but thousands of Chinese civilians. Their actions amounted to genocide on a grand scale. Felton backs up his text with firsthand testimonies from survivors who suffered at the hands of this evil organization. He examines how the guilty were brought to justice and the resulting claims for compensation. As a result, Japan’s Gestapo provides comprehensive evidence of the ruthlessness of the Kempeitai against the white and Asian peoples under their control.
