The Background of the Korean War

The Korean War, lasting from 1950 to 1953, was a significant military conflict between North Korea (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) and South Korea (Republic of Korea) with the support of the United Nations (UN) and other nations. This war ultimately resulted in a temporary division of Korea into two separate countries, a situation that still exists today.

Understanding the Order of Battle

The Order of Battle provides a detailed overview of the military forces and units involved in a particular conflict. It includes essential information about the different factions, their strengths, weaknesses, equipment, and operations during the war. In the case of the Korean War, the Order of Battle explains the deployment and organization of the various armies, navies, and air forces engaged in the conflict.

The United Nations Command (UNC)

The United Nations Command consisted of military forces from 21 countries who supported South Korea in its struggle against North Korea. Under the leadership of the United States, the UNC played a vital role in achieving a ceasefire and establishing the border between North and South Korea.

The North Korean Order of Battle

The North Korean People's Army was the military force deployed by North Korea during the Korean War. The North Korean Order of Battle consisted of various corps, divisions, and independent units that aimed to achieve the reunification of Korea under communist rule. Key divisions included the 1st Infantry Division, 4th Infantry Division, and 6th Infantry Division.

The South Korean Order of Battle

The South Korean Army was supported by the Republic of Korea Armed Forces. They fought alongside the UNC and other allied forces to defend South Korea. The South Korean Order of Battle featured divisions such as the 1st Infantry Division, 2nd Infantry Division, and 6th Infantry Division, among others. These units played a crucial role in repelling North Korean advances and defending strategic locations.

The United States Order of Battle

The United States Military played a significant role in the Korean War. As part of the United Nations Command, the American forces included the Eighth United States Army, which consisted of various divisions, regiments, and support units. The American Order of Battle prominently featured divisions like the 1st Cavalry Division, 2nd Infantry Division, and 25th Infantry Division.

Other Allied Forces

Besides the United States and South Korea, many other nations provided military support during the Korean War. Countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and France deployed their forces to assist in the defense of South Korea. These international forces brought diverse strengths and capabilities to the conflict, adding to the complexity of the Order of Battle.

Naval and Air Forces

Naval and air forces played a vital role in the Korean War as well. The United States Navy and other naval forces carried out strategic naval operations, including amphibious assaults and naval blockades. Air forces from various nations conducted air strikes, close air support, and aerial reconnaissance missions over Korean territory. These military elements are crucial components of the Order of Battle, contributing to the overall success of the military campaign.

The Korean War Order of Battle unveils the vast array of military forces involved in the conflict. From the North Korean People's Army to the United Nations Command and allied nations, including the United States and South Korea, each faction brought its unique capabilities to the battlefield. Understanding the Order of Battle is essential in comprehending the strategic and tactical challenges faced during this historic conflict.

Using historical files kept by each of the armed services and nations involved in the Korean War, Rottman provides information on unit backgrounds, organization, manning, periods of service, insignia, weapons, casualties, and major commands including the Western, North Korean, Communist Chinese, and USSR forces.

The United Nation's first military action and America's first major Cold War action, the Korean War, frequently called the forgotten war, is well documented in studies and reports of specific actions and phases of the war. These sources, however, provide little order of battle information on most of the belligerents, particularly the non-U.S./UN and South Korean forces. Using the historical files kept by each armed service and each nation, Gordon Rottman provides information on combat units and major commands, including both Western forces and North Korean, Communist Chinese, and USSR forces. He has done an invaluable service for scholars and military buffs.

Filling a void that would not likely have been filled otherwise, the book provides information on unit backgrounds, organization, manning, periods of service, insignia, weapons, and casualties. The book will be a primary source for anyone, scholar or layman, interested in researching the Korean War.
