As the Arctic ice continues to melt at an alarming rate, the survival of Arctic whales, one of the most majestic creatures on Earth, hangs in the balance. In these challenging times, individuals like Samuel and Althea Stroum are leading the charge with their efforts to protect and preserve these stunning marine mammals. Join us on an enlightening journey as we delve into the fascinating world of Arctic whales and learn about Samuel and Althea Stroum's extraordinary work.

The Beauty of Arctic Whales:

Arctic whales, including species like the majestic Blue Whale and the elusive Narwhal, captivate our imagination with their sheer size and graceful movements. These gentle giants play a crucial role in maintaining the delicate balance of the Arctic ecosystem. However, their existence is threatened by the rapidly changing environment caused by global warming.

The Impact of Melting Arctic Ice:

The melting Arctic ice has dire consequences not only for Arctic whales but also for the entire planet. As the ice disappears, so does the critical habitat that Arctic whales rely on for survival. The vanishing ice also disrupts their food chain, leading to a decline in numbers and potential extinction of certain species. Samuel and Althea Stroum recognize the urgency of the situation and have dedicated their lives to protecting these magnificent creatures.

Samuel and Althea Stroum's Conservation Efforts:

Samuel and Althea Stroum are renowned conservationists and philanthropists who have made significant contributions to the conservation of Arctic whales. Through their foundation, they have funded groundbreaking research, established marine protected areas, and supported initiatives that aim to mitigate the effects of global warming on Arctic ecosystems.

Research and Technology:

The Stroum Foundation has partnered with leading scientists and researchers to study the behavior and migration patterns of Arctic whales. By utilizing cutting-edge technology such as satellite tracking and underwater drones, they gather valuable data that helps scientists understand the impact of climate change on these magnificent creatures. This information is crucial in formulating effective conservation strategies.

Marine Protected Areas:

One of the key initiatives spearheaded by Samuel and Althea Stroum is the establishment of marine protected areas in the Arctic. These areas serve as havens for Arctic whales, providing them with the necessary sanctuary to breed, feed, and migrate. By safeguarding these regions, the Stroum Foundation aims to ensure the long-term survival of these beautiful creatures.

Climate Change Mitigation:

Understanding that the root cause of the declining Arctic ice is climate change, Samuel and Althea Stroum actively support organizations and projects that promote renewable energy and sustainable practices. By advocating for a cleaner and greener world, they strive to reduce the impacts of global warming and create a safer environment for future generations of Arctic whales.

A Call to Action:

The plight of Arctic whales in a melting world is a global issue that requires immediate attention. Together, we can make a difference by supporting the efforts of individuals like Samuel and Althea Stroum and contributing to organizations that work towards the conservation of Arctic whales. Let's ensure that these magnificent creatures continue to grace the Arctic waters for generations to come.

Among all the large whales on Earth, the most unusual and least studied is the narwhal, the northernmost whale on the planet and the one most threatened by global warming. Narwhals thrive in the fjords and inlets of northern Canada and Greenland. These elusive whales, whose long tusks were the stuff of medieval European myths and Inuit legends, are uniquely adapted to the Arctic ecosystem and are able to dive below thick sheets of ice to depths of up to 1,500 meters in search of their prey-halibut, cod, and squid.

Join Todd McLeish as he travels high above the Arctic circle to meet:

Teams of scientific researchers studying the narwhal's life cycle and the mysteries of its tusk

Inuit storytellers and hunters

Animals that share the narwhals' habitat: walruses, polar bears, bowhead and beluga whales, ivory gulls, and two kinds of seals

McLeish consults logbooks kept by whalers and explorers and interviews folklorists and historians to tease out the relationship between the real narwhal and the mythical unicorn. In Colorado, he visits climatologists studying changes in the seasonal cycles of the Arctic ice. From a history of the trade in narwhal tusks to descriptions of narwhals' vocalizations as heard through hydrophones, Narwhals reveals the beauty and thrill of the narwhal and its habitat, and the threat it faces from a rapidly changing world.
