Enter NASA: The Path to Becoming an Astronaut

While completing her Ph.D. in physics at Stanford, Sally saw a newspaper advertisement that would change her life forever. NASA was seeking astronauts, and they were encouraging women to apply. Intrigued by the possibility of space travel, Sally took a chance and submitted her application.

In 1978, Sally Ride was selected as one of the 35 astronauts from a pool of more than 8,000 applicants. She made history by becoming the first American woman to join the NASA astronaut program. Her intelligence, determination, and passion for exploration impressed the selection committee.

This groundbreaking achievement caught the attention of the entire world and opened doors for future female astronauts.

Ride's second space mission took place in October 1984, when she flew on the STS-41-G mission. This time, she served as a mission specialist and deployed the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite. Her contributions to science and space exploration were invaluable.

The Impact and Legacy

Sally Ride's journey to space inspired countless individuals, especially young girls, to dream big and reach for the stars. She showed the world that gender should never be a barrier to pursuing one's passion for science and exploration.

After leaving NASA in 1987, Sally focused on improving science education for children. She founded an educational company called Sally Ride Science, aiming to get more young people, especially girls, interested in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.
