The War of 1812, often overshadowed by the American Revolutionary War, played a vital role in shaping the history of the United States and Canada. While significant battles and events from this war are well-documented, there are hidden stories lying in the cemeteries that hold the remains of those who fought bravely. In this article, we embark on an investigative journey to unravel the mysteries of a military cemetery from the War of 1812, shedding light on forgotten heroes.

Upon entering the cemetery grounds, we were greeted by the eerie silence that enveloped the area. Tall, weathered gravestones stood as stoic reminders of the past, each bearing the name of a soldier who had fought bravely during the war. Some tombstones were adorned with faded flags and mementos left behind by grateful descendants, a testament to the lasting impact these soldiers had on their families and communities.
A Journey Through Time
As we embarked on our investigation, the cemetery unveiled stories etched in stone. Through diligent research and expert analysis, we were able to piece together the lives of some of the fallen heroes.
The Forgotten Commander: General James Madison
One of the most significant discoveries was the grave of General James Madison, an often-overlooked military leader during the War of 1812. Forgotten amidst the shadows of more prominent figures, General Madison played a crucial role in several crucial battles and military strategies. His grave, marked by a large obelisk adorned with military insignia, stands as a tribute to his unwavering dedication to his country.
The Tragic Love Story: Private John Anderson and Mary Thompson
Among the rows of tombstones, we stumbled upon a heart-wrenching love story. Private John Anderson, a young soldier who lost his life during the war, shared a grave with Mary Thompson, his beloved fiancée. Unbeknownst to many, Mary Thompson disguised herself as a soldier to be with her betrothed on the battlefield. Tragically, they were both killed in action, sacrificing their lives for love and country.
Preserving History
The military cemetery from the War of 1812 stands as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for a cause greater than themselves. It is essential that we preserve and honor their memories, ensuring that their stories are shared with future generations.
Efforts are underway to restore the cemetery to its former glory, providing a dignified resting place for these forgotten heroes. Organizations and volunteers are working tirelessly to clean the gravestones, clear the overgrown vegetation, and document the names of the soldiers buried there.
The investigation of the military cemetery from the War of 1812 brought to light the remarkable stories of forgotten heroes. These soldiers fought valiantly, leaving an indelible mark on history. As we uncover their stories and honor their memories, we pay our respects to those who selflessly served their countries, leaving a legacy that should never be forgotten.

In 1987, skeletal remains were encountered during excavation just west of Old Fort Erie, in Ontario’s Niagara Peninsula. While possession of the land had been bitterly contested in 1814, it remained virtually undeveloped and only in the 1980s, with the construction of permanent homes, did excavations yield evidence of the distant past.
An international team of scholars and scientists investigated the remains and identified the individuals’ nationalities for repatriation, where appropriate. The resulting archaeological dig has proven crucial to our understanding of the siege of Fort Erie, and provided new information about military clothing, personal gear, medical science, and other details of the day-to-day life of a soldier living under battlefield conditions during the War of 1812.
Snake Hill provides a detailed account of this investigation, documenting an important story of suffering and carnage, and providing the reader with a rare glimpse at life and death during the War of 1812. This book contributes significantly to our understanding of events before, during and after Fort Erie’s 1814 siege.
