The Largest Naval Battle of World War I

The Battle of Jutland, which took place from 31st May to 1st June 1916, was the largest naval engagement of World War I. Fought between the British Royal Navy's Grand Fleet, led by Admiral Sir John Jellicoe, and the Imperial German Navy's High Seas Fleet, commanded by Vice-Admiral Reinhard Scheer, the battle had a significant impact on the course of the war.

The Key Players: Grand Fleet vs. High Seas Fleet

At the heart of the Battle of Jutland were two powerful naval forces - the Grand Fleet and the High Seas Fleet. The British Grand Fleet, stationed in northeastern Scotland, had the primary task of maintaining control over the North Sea. It consisted of 28 battleships, 9 battlecruisers, 8 armored cruisers, 26 light cruisers, and 78 destroyers.

On the opposing side, the German High Seas Fleet, based in Wilhelmshaven and Kiel, aimed to break the British naval blockade and establish supremacy in the North Sea. It comprised 16 battleships, 5 battlecruisers, 6 pre-dreadnought battleships, 11 light cruisers, and 61 torpedo boats.
