The Rise of the Polish Air Force
In the early stages of World War II, the Polish Air Force stood as one of the most formidable air forces in Europe. Boasting experienced pilots, advanced aircraft, and a steadfast determination, Poland fought valiantly against the German invasion.
Before the war, Poland had made significant advances in aviation, establishing a robust aircraft manufacturing industry and training skilled aviators. When conflict erupted in 1939, Poland had around 900 aircraft in its inventory, including modern fighters such as the PZL P.11 and the PZL P.24. The Polish Air Force was ready to defend their nation.

The Battle of Poland
However, the Polish Air Force faced overwhelming odds as the German Luftwaffe dominated the skies. Despite their best efforts, Polish pilots were outnumbered, outgunned, and lacking the necessary support from ground forces.
The Battle of Poland was characterized by relentless bombings of Polish airfields and cities, which severely crippled the Polish Air Force. Many Polish aircraft were destroyed on the ground, leaving the pilots with limited resources to retaliate. Brave Polish aviators fought desperately, inflicting damage on the Luftwaffe and proving their skill and courage.
In Exile: Continuing the Fight
Following the defeat of Poland, many Polish pilots managed to escape to other European countries and eventually joined the Royal Air Force to continue their fight against the Axis forces. The Polish Air Force in Exile was formed, composed of skilled pilots who were determined to contribute to the defeat of Nazi Germany.
The Polish units became renowned for their exceptional abilities, striking fear into the hearts of the enemy. They played a crucial role in the Battle of Britain, securing vital victories and helping turn the tide of the war in favor of the Allies. Polish pilots achieved impressive records, becoming some of the top aces of the World War II era.
The Warsaw Uprising
Despite their contributions and remarkable successes, tragedy struck the Polish Air Force in World War II during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. The unit was tasked with providing air support to the Polish resistance fighting against German occupation.
The Warsaw Uprising was a brutal and devastating battle that lasted for 63 days. The Polish Air Force bravely carried out their missions, but they were met with fierce opposition from the Luftwaffe. In the end, the city of Warsaw lay in ruins, and the Polish Air Force suffered significant losses.
The Legacy of the Polish Air Force
The story of the Polish Air Force in World War II is one of courage, resilience, and sacrifice. Despite facing overwhelming odds and enduring immense hardship, Polish pilots fought with unwavering determination. Their contributions to the war effort cannot be underestimated.
Today, the legacy of the Polish Air Force lives on through museums, memorials, and remembrance events. The brave men and women who served in the Polish Air Force during World War II are remembered for their heroic actions and their unwavering commitment to defending their homeland.
As we reflect on their story, let us never forget the extraordinary efforts made by the Polish Air Force in World War II, and let us honor their memory with gratitude and respect.

With 14 Squadrons it was larger than any other of the Air Force from Nazi-occupied Europe that had joined the Allies. Over 17,000 men and women passed through the ranks of the Polish Air Force while it was stationed in the UK. They shot down 745 enemy aircraft, with a further 175 unconfirmed.
They dropped thousands of bombs and laid hundreds of mines, flying 102,486 sorties notching up a total of 290,895 operation flying hours. They achieved this at a cost of 1,973 killed and 1,388 wounded. They won 342 British gallantry awards.
The Forgotten Few is a story of heroism and sacrifice, about a group of soldiers seeking vengeance and victory.
