The Jewish exodus from Iraq between 1948 and 1951 is a chapter of history often overlooked, overshadowed by other prominent events of the time. This article sheds light on the untold story of how the Jewish community in Iraq faced significant challenges and ultimately embarked on a mass migration from their homeland. Although this exodus is often termed as an evacuation, it is crucial to understand the circumstances that led to the departure of the Iraqi Jewish population during this period.

The Vibrant Jewish Community in Iraq

Prior to the mass migration, the Jewish community in Iraq had a rich history stretching back to biblical times. Dating back to the Babylonian exile, Jews had lived in Iraq for centuries, maintaining a vibrant and influential presence. Jewish Iraqis played prominent roles in various fields, including commerce, politics, and the arts, contributing significantly to the country's cultural fabric.

By the 20th century, Baghdad had a thriving Jewish community, with synagogues, schools, and vibrant neighborhoods. Jews made up a significant portion of the population, with estimates suggesting a community of around 150,000 - 180,000 individuals. Despite facing occasional religious tensions, the Jewish community in Iraq enjoyed relatively peaceful coexistence with their Muslim and Christian neighbors.

The Impact of 1948 and the Birth of Israel

The declaration of the State of Israel in 1948 had profound implications for Jewish communities across the Arab world. In Iraq, the establishment of Israel triggered a wave of anti-Zionist sentiment and hostility towards the Jewish population. The government undertook measures that targeted Jewish businesses, leading to economic hardships.

Moreover, instances of persecution and violence against Jews increased, leaving the community vulnerable and fearful. Bombings were targeted at Jewish centers, synagogues were attacked, and Jewish individuals faced harassment. Amidst these challenges, the Zionist underground organization, Mossad, facilitated the immigration of Iraqi Jews to Israel.

The Mossad and Operation Ezra and Nehemiah

Operation Ezra and Nehemiah was the name given to the clandestine plan initiated by the Mossad to facilitate the immigration of Iraqi Jews to Israel. This covert operation spanned from 1950 to 1951. Mossad agents worked undercover in Iraq, assisting Jews seeking to leave the country.

Under Operation Ezra and Nehemiah, close to 120,000 Iraqi Jews were airlifted to Israel. Initially, the operation was carried out discreetly, but as tensions escalated, the Iraqi government began openly permitting Jewish emigration. Those who wished to leave were required to renounce their Iraqi citizenship, relinquish their property, and depart with only a minimal amount of money.

Life in Israel: Challenges and Adaptation

The mass migration of Iraqi Jews to Israel presented numerous challenges for both the immigrants and the Israeli government. A significant cultural and linguistic divide existed between the two populations, making integration a complex process.

The Iraqi Jewish immigrants faced discrimination within Israeli society, as their unique cultural practices and traditions were initially met with resistance. However, as time passed, Iraqi Jewish culture started to enrich Israeli society, particularly in the realms of cuisine, music, and literature.

Despite initial difficulties, many of the Iraqi Jews who migrated to Israel went on to succeed in various fields, contributing to the growth and development of their adopted homeland. Their experience became an integral part of Israel's melting pot identity.

The Jewish exodus from Iraq between 1948 and 1951 remains a significant but often overlooked event in history. The challenges faced by the Jewish community during this period led to a mass migration to Israel. However, the story doesn't end with their departure, but rather with their successful integration in Israel, ultimately enriching the nation's cultural tapestry. Acknowledging this chapter of history helps shed light on the experiences of the Jewish Iraqis and their contributions to both Iraqi and Israeli societies.

In this study, Moshe Gat details how the immigration of the Jews from Iraq in effect marked the eradication of one of the oldest and most deeply-rooted Diaspora communities. He provides a background to these events and argues that both Iraqi discrimination and the actions of the Zionist underground in previous years played a part in the flight. The Denaturalization law of 1950 saw tens of thousands of Jews registering for emigration, and a bomb thrown at a synagogue in 1951 accelerated the exodus.
