The French Fascination with the Orient

France, during the Early Modern period, was captivated by the splendors of the East. The allure of exotic lands, tantalizing aromas, and rich cultural traditions enchanted French elites, fueling a growing fascination with Orientalism. The Safavid Empire, with its opulent court and refined arts, became a particularly enticing subject of interest and admiration among French intellectuals and artists.

The Silk Road: A Path of Exchange

The famous Silk Road acted as a bridge between distant civilizations, facilitating the exchange of goods, ideas, and artistic influences. The Safavid Empire's strategic location made it an essential hub along this ancient trading route. French merchants, enticed by the allure of Persian riches, ventured to the Safavid court in search of new luxury goods and cultural experiences.

Persian Influences on French Art and Architecture

Safavid aesthetics began to seep into the artistic fabric of Early Modern France. French painters sought inspiration from Persian miniatures, incorporating elements of their style and compositions into their own works. Architecture also experienced a Persian twist, with features like domes and intricate geometrical motifs reminiscent of the Safavid Empire becoming prominent in French structures.

The Language of Elegance: Persian Poetry in France

French aristocrats developed a taste for Persian poetry, captivated by the lyrical beauty and depth of thought within its verses. French poets, such as Charles de Rochefort and Thomas D'Herbelot, turned to Persian literary works for inspiration, assimilating Persian poetic techniques and themes into their own creations. The echoes of Safavid poetry can still be heard in French poetic traditions today.

These precious relics serve as tangible reminders of the interwoven historical narratives between the two empires.

The Persian Mirror explores France's preoccupation with Persia in the seventeenth century. Long before Montesquieu's Persian Letters, French intellectuals, diplomats and even ordinary Parisians were fascinated by Persia and eagerly consumed travel accounts, fairy tales, and the spectacle of the Persian ambassador's visit to Paris and Versailles in 1715. Using diplomatic sources, fiction and printed and painted images, The Persian Mirror describes how the French came to see themselves in Safavid Persia. In doing so, it revises our notions of orientalism and the exotic and suggests that early modern Europeans had more nuanced responses to Asia than previously imagined.
