Supported by the United States government, six ships were commissioned: the Vincennes, Peacock, Porpoise, Flying Fish, Sea Gull, and Relief. Their journey took them across the Pacific Ocean, reaching as far as the Antarctic, exploring the coastlines of South America, and venturing into the Pacific Islands.

Setting Sail and Facing Challenges

On August 18, 1838, the expedition set sail from Norfolk, Virginia. The crew faced numerous challenges, including treacherous storms, encounters with hostile natives, and unfamiliar diseases. Despite these obstacles, they pressed on with determination, fueled by their commitment to the pursuit of knowledge.

Scientific and Cultural Discoveries

The expedition team carried out extensive scientific research, contributing significantly to the fields of oceanography, geology, botany, and ethnography. Their studies led to the discovery of new species, mapping previously uncharted territories, and collecting invaluable specimens.

Moreover, the journey provided captivating insights into diverse cultures and societies. The crew interacted with indigenous people throughout their travels, documenting their traditions, languages, and customs. These valuable recordings provided a unique understanding of the world's multicultural heritage.

Encounters with the Antarctic

One of the most awe-inspiring parts of the expedition was the team's encounter with the Antarctic. They were the first to chart a significant portion of the coastline, recording immense glaciers, spectacular icebergs, and unruly storms. Their findings helped shape our understanding of this frozen continent and paved the way for future exploration.

Personal Stories and Sacrifices

Behind the scientific achievements, the United States Exploring Expedition is also a story of human resilience and sacrifice. The crew endured harsh conditions, with many falling ill and losing their lives along the way.

Notably, tensions grew among the crew members, leading to court-martial proceedings against Lieutenant Wilkes upon their return. These bitter disputes, however, do not overshadow the remarkable achievements of the expedition.

A Legacy Worth Celebrating

The United States Exploring Expedition left an indelible mark on history. Its findings continue to shape our understanding of the world and its diverse ecosystems. Penguin Classics' edition of the expedition's official account, meticulously edited and beautifully presented, allows readers to immerse themselves in the extraordinary voyage.

Join us on this journey of intrigue, courage, and enlightenment – a voyage that has remarkably stood the test of time. Discover the secrets of the United States Exploring Expedition 1838-1842 through the captivating pages of the Penguin Classics edition.

One of the finest nineteenth-century first-person narratives of a sea voyage in existence, and a principle source for Sea of Glory, The Private Journal of William Reynolds brings to life the boisterous world traversed by the six vessels that comprised America's first ocean-going voyage of discovery, the U.S. Exploring Expedition of 1838–1842. With great eloquence and verve Midshipman William Reynolds describes the harrowing 87,000-mile, four-year circuit of the globe, and relates the story of how the abusive commander of the Ex. Ex., Lieutenant Charles Wilkes, gradually lost the support of his crew. With a seaman's understanding and an artist's appreciation for the wild beauty that surrounds him, the Journal is a tour de force combining meticulous observations with a young man's sense of wonder and, on occasion, terror as he is tossed about by the tremendous seas.
