As travel between the two planets becomes easier, and this will by necessity become the case in order to deposit one million colonists or more upon Mars, then many factors, (for example, war, including nuclear war, disease etc.) could easily travel from Earth to Mars as well. Or even from Mars to Earth for that matter. And this is only the BEGINNING of the range of catastrophic problems with a Mars colony that exist.
