The Battle of Waterloo remains one of the most iconic conflicts in history. Fought on June 18, 1815, this decisive battle marked the end of Napoleon Bonaparte's rule in France. Over the years, countless books and articles have been written about the events leading up to the battle and its aftermath. However, some crucial documents have remained unpublished, providing a fresh perspective on Napoleon's strategy during the Waterloo campaign. In this article, we delve into these long-forgotten papers and shed new light on the famous battle.

Unraveling the Mystery Behind "With Napoleon At Waterloo"

Among the unpublished documents is a memoir titled "With Napoleon At Waterloo," written by an anonymous French officer who witnessed the battle firsthand. This gripping account provides a rare glimpse into the emotions, tactics, and decisions made by Napoleon and his army. The document details the movements of individual divisions, the internal conflicts within the French command, and the various challenges faced by both sides.

According to the memoir, Napoleon's strategy at Waterloo involved a three-pronged attack, aiming to divide and conquer the opposing forces of the Duke of Wellington and Prussian Marshal Gebhard von Blücher. However, unforeseen circumstances, miscommunications, and the resilience of the Allied forces derailed Napoleon's plan.

The Peninsula: A Crucible of Conflict

While the Battle of Waterloo is undoubtedly the centerpiece of Napoleon's downfall, his military campaigns in the Iberian Peninsula leading up to the historic battle laid the groundwork for his ultimate defeat. Several unpublished letters and reports offer new insights into the challenges faced by the French armies in Spain and Portugal.

One such document describes the difficult terrain, guerrilla warfare tactics employed by Spanish and Portuguese resistance fighters, and the logistical nightmares faced by Napoleon's troops. These unpublished accounts reveal the hardships faced by the French army and provide a glimpse into the underlying factors that weakened Napoleon's forces before the Battle of Waterloo.

The Lost Battle Plans

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the unpublished documents is the discovery of Napoleon's original battle plans. These blueprints, recovered from the late Emperor's personal archives, shed light on his meticulous preparations for Waterloo and the subsequent events that unfolded on the battlefield.

Contrary to popular belief, Napoleon's battle plans showcased a comprehensive understanding of the enemy's strengths and weaknesses. The unpublished documents reveal Napoleon's intention to exploit specific vulnerabilities in the Allied forces, demonstrating his strategic brilliance even in the face of defeat. The recovered plans also challenge previous assumptions about the battlefield tactics employed by French forces, offering a new perspective on their true intentions.

Debunking the Myths

Over the years, numerous myths and misconceptions have surrounded Napoleon's Waterloo campaign. The unpublished documents provide an opportunity to debunk some of these long-standing beliefs and shed light on the facts.

One such myth is the assumption that Napoleon's downfall was solely attributed to a series of tactical mistakes. However, the documents reveal that external factors, such as the Prussian reinforcement led by Marshal Blücher, played a significant role in shifting the tide of the battle. By exploring these unheard perspectives, historians can reassess the factors that contributed to Napoleon's defeat and gain a more accurate understanding of the historical context.

A Legacy Uncovered

The unveiling of these unpublished documents not only enriches our understanding of the Battle of Waterloo but also offers insights into Napoleon's military campaigns in the Iberian Peninsula. These long-forgotten accounts of war help us paint a more comprehensive picture of the events that shaped Europe in the early 19th century.

As historians continue to analyze and interpret these newfound sources, we can expect a revision of narratives surrounding Napoleon's Waterloo campaign. The brilliance, failures, and strategic choices of one of history's most iconic figures are brought to life through these previously hidden treasures, allowing us to delve deeper into the mysteries of the past and uncover the truth of what really happened at Waterloo.

The long-lost documents on the Peninsula and the memoir detailing experiences "With Napoleon At Waterloo" provide an unprecedented look into the strategy, challenges, and decisions made during this historic conflict. By shedding new light on these events, historians can refine their understanding of Napoleon's Waterloo campaign and reassess the factors that led to his ultimate downfall. These unpublished documents serve as reminders that history is a never-ending journey of discovery, as we continue to uncover and decipher hidden accounts that shape our collective narrative.

A varied and interesting collection of Napoleonic documents drawn from a wide variety of sources and illustrated with portraits of some of the leading military figures of the era. Despite the title, not all the content deals with Bonaparte’s last campaign. There are chapters on Egypt - including the unpublished diary of Sergeant Daniel Nichol. Another Sergeant, D. Robertson, gives an unforgettable account of Sir John Moore’s retreat to Corunna early in the Peninsular war and there is more from the pen of Sergeant Nichol on the crossing of the River Douro and the Battle of Talavera. The Waterloo section of the collection, comprising the papers collected by Edward Bruce Low, includes accounts of the fierce fight for Hougoumont farmhouse; the famous charge of the Scots Greys; the actions of the Gordon Highlanders, and the memoir of Life-Guardsman Shaw. On the other side of the lines, there are diaries and journals of Napoleon’s equerry and aide-du-camp and a description of the last gasp charge of the Imperial Old Guard. The book’s closing chapter - also written by Sgt Nichol - give an account of his suffering as a Prisoner of War in France.
