The Early Years

The world was forever changed on February 23, 1868, when William Edward Burghardt Du Bois, known as W.E.B. Du Bois, was born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Growing up in a predominantly white community, Du Bois experienced the harsh realities of racism from a young age, yet he surpassed all expectations to become one of the most influential civil rights activists, scholars, and leaders of his time.

The Education of a Leader

Du Bois' thirst for knowledge led him to excel academically, earning a scholarship to attend Fisk University, a historically Black college in Nashville, Tennessee. He later furthered his studies at Harvard University, becoming the first African American to earn a doctorate degree from this prestigious institution.

The Rise of an Activist

Du Bois dedicated his life to fighting for racial equality and justice. He co-founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and served as the editor of its influential magazine, The Crisis, from 1910 to 1934. Through his writings and activism, Du Bois fearlessly confronted the racial injustices plaguing American society, making him a significant force in the early 20th-century civil rights movement.

The Scholar and Writer

As a scholar, Du Bois delved into the socio-economic and historical roots of racism, producing groundbreaking works that challenged the prevailing racial ideologies of his time. His masterpiece, "The Souls of Black Folk," published in 1903, eloquently addressed the issues of identity, double consciousness, and the struggles faced by African Americans in a racially divided America.

The Pan-African Pioneer

Beyond the borders of the United States, Du Bois played a crucial role in championing the Pan-African movement. He actively participated in international conferences, advocating for the freedom and empowerment of people of African descent worldwide. His Pan-African beliefs laid the foundation for future liberation movements around the globe, inspiring generations of activists to challenge colonialism and fight for equality.

The Legacy Lives On

Du Bois' impact continues to resonate today, as his ideas and struggles remain relevant in the ongoing fight against systemic racism and social injustice. His concepts of racial prides, African heritage, and the importance of education as a tool of empowerment continue to shape discussions on race and equality.

Although Du Bois faced numerous challenges and opposition throughout his life, his dedication, intellect, and unwavering determination made him an incredible leader and scholar. He left an indelible mark on the world, reminding us of the power of knowledge, activism, and the pursuit of justice.

W.E.B. Du Bois was one of the leading activist men of letters in 20th-century America. Du Bois organized, protested, laid out programs, petitioned, and raised questions of long-term strategy and short-term tactics. He wrote detailed scholarly investigations, Souls of Black Folk and Black Reconstruction among them, as well as popular current articles. He was a commanding speaker and a prodigious correspondent. And yet, it was not until the 1980s that his complete writings became available.

The World of W.E.B. Du Bois was created to provide a short journey through his views on virtually all aspects of 20th-century life. More than 1,000 quotations from his published writings and correspondence are provided. These are grouped into 19 topical and one miscellaneous chapter. Each quote begins with a heading designed to summarize the main sense of the quotation. A subject index provides additional access to the ideas of this complex figure. Essential reading for all involved in American race relations and intellectual history and American and Black Studies.
