The history of World War II is filled with intriguing tales and conflicting narratives. One such story revolves around two prominent figures in Yugoslavia – Josip Broz Tito and Draža Mihailović. In this article, we will delve deep into the uncensored tale of Tito and Mihailović, shedding light on the lesser-known aspects of their lives and actions.

The Rise of Tito

As Yugoslavia faced German occupation during World War II, Josip Broz Tito emerged as a key figure leading the Partisans, a resistance movement fighting against the Axis powers. Despite numerous challenges, Tito managed to unify different factions under the banner of the Partisan movement. Under his leadership, the Partisans effectively disrupted German supply lines, conducted guerrilla warfare, and liberated several territories from Nazi control.

The Controversial Role of Mihailović

While Tito gained international recognition, another key player in Yugoslavia during the war was Draža Mihailović. As the leader of the royalist Chetnik movement, Mihailović initially sought cooperation with the Axis powers to combat the communist threat. However, as the war progressed, his stance changed, and he started fighting against the Germans, albeit through different tactics compared to Tito.

The Clash of Ideologies

The dynamic between Tito and Mihailović was not just a clash of military strategies but also a clash of ideologies. Tito's Partisans embraced communism and supported the idea of a united socialist Yugoslavia. On the other hand, Mihailović's Chetniks had a monarchist ideology and aimed to restore the pre-war Yugoslav monarchy. These ideological differences further fueled tensions between the two factions.

Trial and Execution of Draža Mihailović

As World War II neared its end, Tito's Partisans gained significant momentum and popularity, leading to a power shift in Yugoslavia. Mihailović, accused of collaborating with the Axis powers and war crimes, was captured and put on trial in 1946. Despite international pressure and claims of an unfair trial, Mihailović was found guilty and executed.

Tito's Rule and Legacy

Tito's victory in Yugoslavia granted him unquestionable power, and he went on to establish a communist regime. Led by his unique ideology of "Titoism," Yugoslavia experienced a period of relative stability and economic growth. However, conflicts between different ethnic groups simmered beneath the surface, eventually leading to the breakup of Yugoslavia after Tito's death in 1980.

The Aftermath and Reevaluation

After the dissolution of Yugoslavia, the historical narratives surrounding Tito and Mihailović faced reevaluation. Different interpretations emerged, highlighting both their achievements and shortcomings. Some argue that Tito's oppressive regime and suppression of political dissent cannot be overlooked, while others emphasize his role in preventing the spread of communism and preserving the country's unity.

The story of Tito and Mihailović is undoubtedly a complex and controversial one. Their actions during World War II and their subsequent influence on Yugoslavia's trajectory offer valuable insights into the challenges of wartime leadership and the complexities of ideological struggles. By exploring the uncensored story of Tito and Mihailović, we gain a deeper understanding of this pivotal period in history and the lasting impact it had on the Balkans.

David Martin, a distinguished journalist, political analyst and staff member on the Senate Judiciary Committee, first published his book ALLY BETRAYED in 1946. Having devoted his life to uncovering the truth and to defending Mihailovich, Martin’s book asks the crucial questions:

1. Why did the Allied press which had made a great hero of Mihailovich as a resister of Axis invaders of Yugoslavia begin to play him down after 1942?

2. What was Tito’s past? And where was the radio station located that heralded his appearance in Yugoslavia?

3. What decision was reached at Teheran with respect to Tito and Mihailovich?

4. How was the ALLIED military intelligence about Yugoslavia falsified?

5. Why did Churchill say of Yugoslavia, “I was deceived and badly informed.”

David Martin was born in Ontario, Canada, in 1914. Before World War II, he wrote on Canadian affairs for Current History, The Nation, The New Republic, the New Leader, and other journals. He joined the Canadian Air Force in October 1942, became a pilot, and flew on the Burmese frontier. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

With a Foreword by Dame Rebecca West, one of Mihailovich’s most avid supporters.
