Unraveling the Mystery of Translation Origins

Historians and scholars have long attempted to unravel the mystery surrounding the origins of translation. While primitive forms of translation have been recorded in various civilizations, it was in ancient Egypt that the first known instance of translation took place.

In 196 BCE, Ptolemy II Philadelphus, the ruler of Egypt, sought to have the Hebrew Bible translated into Greek. This monumental task involved rendering the sacred scriptures into a language that was widely understood by the diverse population of Alexandria.

The Septuagint Transforms Translation History

The translation project commissioned by Ptolemy II Philadelphus is famously known as the Septuagint. According to legend, seventy-two Jewish scholars were gathered to undertake this pioneering task.

The Septuagint not only marked a significant milestone in translation history, but it also had a profound impact on the spread and preservation of religious texts, fostering intercultural and interfaith dialogue.

The completion of the Septuagint was a massive achievement, as it provided the opportunity for individuals across different regions to gain access to the religious traditions and narratives of others.

The Challenges and Achievements of the First Translators

Translating the Bible was no simple feat, considering the significant linguistic and cultural differences between Hebrew and Greek. The first translators faced numerous challenges in capturing the essence, nuances, and intricate wordplay present in the original text.

Despite the linguistic complexities, these scholars managed to produce a translation that stood the test of time. The Septuagint became widely accepted and used throughout the Mediterranean region, not only by the Jewish community but also by early Christians.

Implications for Modern Translation Practices

The first-ever translation holds immense significance for modern translation practices. It set a precedent for subsequent translation projects and paved the way for the development of translation theories and methodologies.

Modern translators draw inspiration from the challenges faced by the first translators. It serves as a reminder that translation is a complex process that requires a deep understanding of both the source and target languages and cultures.

Furthermore, the Septuagint demonstrates the power of translation in preserving and disseminating knowledge across cultures. It highlights the role of translators as facilitators of cross-cultural communication and understanding.

The Ever-Evolving Art of Translation

Since the first-ever translation, the field of translation has evolved significantly. Advancements in technology, linguistic studies, and intercultural understanding have revolutionized the translation industry.

Today, translation plays a crucial role in various industries, including literature, commerce, diplomacy, and entertainment. Professional translators continue to unlock the doors to foreign cultures, enabling global connectivity and mutual comprehension.

The first-ever translation of the Hebrew Bible into Greek, known as the Septuagint, holds a significant place in the history of translation. It symbolizes the power of translation to bridge linguistic and cultural gaps and emphasizes the importance of preserving and sharing knowledge across civilizations.

As we continue to explore and decode ancient texts, we owe a debt of gratitude to the pioneering translators who embarked on this journey thousands of years ago. Their dedication and perseverance paved the way for the rich tapestry of translations we enjoy today.

For the first time ever, Napoleon's "Chronicles of Caesar's Wars" ("Précis des guerres de César") is available in English.

Dictated by Napoleon to Count Marchand, his valet, while in exile on St. Helena, Chronicles of Caesar's Wars explores Caesar's rise, his campaigns in Europe and North Africa, and the plot that killed him. Napoleon, who had a lifelong obsession with Caesar, wrote this book in one of his last acts. The work relaxed him, "tossing a few flowers on the path that was leading to the tomb," as Count Marchand's preface recalls.

Napoleon passionately explores Caesar’s battles in Gaul and during the Civil War. He concludes each chapter with observations, sometimes providing details, sometimes veering away from praise towards criticism, applying the insights of a military career and a healthy ego to explain what he would have done better. Napoleon ends the book with a remarkable defense of Caesar’s dictatorship. He takes apart his assassins’ justifications and the fault-finding of “good Plutarch the libeler” with such fervor that one can scarcely believe a gulf of two millennia stood between the two eminent men. In a sense, though, it was also a defense of his own government.

Attached to the book are previously untranslated essays in which Napoleon takes on the role of literary critic and philosopher. He criticizes Virgil’s Aeneid for butchering Homer’s Iliad, and Voltaire for unflatteringly depicting Mohammad, another of Napoleon’s heroes. He explores in another essay whether a man has the right to kill himself, an act we now know he had personally attempted.
