The fight against slavery has formed an integral part of human history and its abolition remains one of the most significant and inspiring achievements. However, the period between 1880 and 1940 witnessed a remarkable transformation in the way activists approached the cause. In this article, we delve into the politics behind anti-slavery activism during this era and explore the profound impacts it had on society.

Influential Figures and Movements

During this period, a host of remarkable individuals emerged as prominent anti-slavery activists. From William Lloyd Garrison and Frederick Douglass in the United States to Mary Carpenter and Samuel Sharpe in the United Kingdom, these figures played a pivotal role in challenging the status quo.

Moreover, various movements sprung up across the globe, advocating for the abolition of slavery. The American Anti-Slavery Society, the Underground Railroad, and the Suffragette Movement were just a few examples of the many organizations staunchly fighting for freedom and justice worldwide.

The Evolution of Methods

In order to effectively combat slavery, activists had to adapt their methods to the changing times. The period between 1880 and 1940 witnessed an increasing focus on leveraging legal systems and political channels to enact change. This shift in strategy allowed activists to challenge discriminatory laws and advocate for equal rights more efficiently.

Additionally, anti-slavery activists employed various forms of media to raise awareness and garner support. Newspapers, books, and even plays served as powerful tools in exposing the harsh realities of slavery and inspiring widespread outrage.

Global Impact

The politics of anti-slavery activism during this period reverberated across the globe. The efforts of activists, although initially met with resistance, contributed to the eventual legal abolition of slavery in numerous countries.

For example, in the United States, the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862 abolished slavery, while the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1865 ensured its permanent abolition.

In the United Kingdom, the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 marked a turning point in the fight against slavery. However, the activism of the late 19th and early 20th centuries played an instrumental role in combating residual discrimination and advocating for equal rights.

Legacy and Ongoing Struggles

While the abolition of slavery represents a significant victory, the fight for racial equality and justice continues to this day. The political maneuvers and strategies employed during the period between 1880 and 1940 have left a lasting impact on subsequent anti-discrimination movements.

Despite progress made, systemic racial discrimination and the lingering effects of historical oppression still persist. Recognizing and understanding the historical context and politics of anti-slavery activism is crucial in addressing these ongoing struggles and ensuring a more just and equitable society for all.

The politics surrounding anti-slavery activism between 1880 and 1940 shaped the foundations of modern human rights movements. From influential figures and evolving strategies to their global impact, the fight against slavery during this era transformed societies and inspired future generations.

By shedding light on this often-overlooked period, we gain valuable insights into the challenges faced, lessons learned, and ongoing battles for justice. It is through understanding our past that we can pave the way for a better future, free from the shackles of discrimination and oppression.

Between the late 1880s and the onset of the Second World War, anti-slavery activism experienced a revival in Europe. Anti-slavery organizations in Britain, Italy, France, and Switzerland forged an informal international network to fight the continued existence of slavery and slave trading in Africa. Humanitarian Imperialism explores the scope and outreach of these antislavery groups along with their organisational efforts and campaigning strategies. The
account focuses on the interwar years, when slavery in Africa became a focal point of humanitarian and imperial interest, linking Catholic and Protestant philanthropists, missionaries of different faiths, colonial officials, diplomats, and political leaders in Africa and Europe. At the centre of the narrative is
the campaign against slavery in Ethiopia, an issue which served as a catalyst for the articulation of international humanitarian standards within the League of Nations in Geneva.

By looking at the interplay between British and Italian advocates of abolition, Humanitarian Imperialism shows how in the 1930s anti-slavery campaigning evolved in close association with Fascist imperialism. Thus, during the Italo-Ethiopian war of 1935, the anti-slavery argument became a propaganda tool to placate public opinion in Britain and elsewhere. Because of its global echoes, however, the conflict also generated worldwide protest that undermined the beliefs and certainties of
anti-slavery campaigners, resulting in a crisis of humanitarian imperialism. By following the story of anti-slavery activism into the post-1945 period, this volume illuminates the continuities and discontinuities in the international history of humanitarian organizations as well as the history of imperial
humanitarianism.
