The fascinating history and controversial origin of Ashkenazi Jewry have been a subject of intense debate for centuries. This article aims to shed light on this contentious topic, unraveling the mysteries and providing you with a comprehensive understanding of the true roots of Ashkenazi Jewry.
Understanding Ashkenazi Jewry
Ashkenazi Jews are one of the major Jewish ethnic divisions, accounting for the largest Jewish population in the world. They have made significant contributions to various fields throughout history, including science, art, literature, and finance. However, their origins have long puzzled historians, geneticists, and religious scholars alike.
Evidence from Historical Accounts
One of the prevailing theories suggests that Ashkenazi Jews descended from Jewish communities in medieval Germany and Eastern Europe. This theory finds support in historical records and documents, which trace the migration of Jews to these regions during the 10th to 13th centuries.

Furthermore, the Jewish communities that emerged in these areas became prosperous, developed their distinct customs and language (Yiddish), and played a crucial role in the intellectual and economic growth of their respective countries.
A Genetic Perspective
Advances in genetic research have revolutionized our understanding of human history. Genetic studies focusing on Ashkenazi Jews have yielded surprising results that shed light on their origin.
Research conducted on the DNA of Ashkenazi Jews has revealed distinctive genetic markers that link them to a small group of ancestors. These genetic signatures are prevalent among both Ashkenazi Jews and Sephardic Jews, depicting a shared ancestry.
Additionally, a study conducted by Dr. Harry Ostrer of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine analyzed the genetic makeup of Ashkenazi Jews and concluded that their roots can be traced back to the Middle East, specifically the Levant region, which includes modern-day Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, and Jordan.
The Khazar Hypothesis
However, an alternative theory, known as the Khazar Hypothesis, posits a different origin for Ashkenazi Jewry. This hypothesis suggests that Ashkenazi Jews are descendants of the Khazars, a Turkic people who converted to Judaism in the 8th century.
Proponents of this theory argue that the Khazar kingdom, located in what is now Ukraine, served as a bridge between Europe and Asia, encouraging cultural exchanges and the adoption of Judaism among its ruling elite. They claim that over time, the Khazars' descendants formed the Ashkenazi Jewish community.
The Controversy Unraveled - Bridging the Gap
While the debate surrounding the origin of Ashkenazi Jewry remains lively, recent research attempts to bridge the gap between these two opposing theories.
A groundbreaking study conducted by a team of geneticists at Columbia University found that although Ashkenazi Jews have genetic ties to the Middle East, they also exhibit significant genetic contributions from European populations. The study suggests that the genetic history of Ashkenazi Jewry involves a complex interplay between Levantine and European populations.
These findings lend support to the theory that Ashkenazi Jewry originated from a mixture of Jewish communities in the Middle East and the Khazars, combining genetic traits from both regions.
s and New Perspectives
The origin of Ashkenazi Jewry remains a subject of ongoing research and debate. Through historical accounts, genetic studies, and the exploration of alternative theories, we gain deeper insights into the complex genesis of this influential Jewish community.
By embracing a holistic view that acknowledges the possible contributions of multiple ancestral lineages, we can appreciate the diverse heritage and rich history of Ashkenazi Jewry.

Where do East European Jews – about 90 percent of Ashkenazi Jewry – descend from? This book conveys new insights into a century-old controversy. Jits van Straten argues that there is no evidence for the most common assumption that German Jews fled en masse to Eastern Europe to constitute East European Jewry. Dealing with another much debated theory, van Straten points to the fact that there is no way to identify the descendants of the Khazars in the Ashkenazi population. Using a multidisciplinary approach, the author draws heavily on demographic findings which are vital to evaluate the s of modern DNA research. Finally, it is suggested that East European Jews are mainly descendants of Ukrainians and Belarussians.
UPDATE: The article “The origin of East European Ashkenazim via a southern route” (Aschkenas 2017; 27(1): 239-270) is intended to clarify the origin of East European Jewry between roughly 300 BCE and 1000 CE. It is a supplement to this book.
