A true story about real people, espionage, and combat including the "Green Beret Affair" that shocked the nation in 1969. From working with a double agent who betrays his friendship and exposes a top-secret cross border operation, Terry McIntosh wrestles with his own doubts and fears while protecting the rights of others to live free. He was chosen from the ranks of long range reconnaissance training to serve with Special Forces Detachment A-team 414 in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam 1968-1969. The border camp conducted clandestine operations to observe and engage a growing Viet Cong armed force 15 miles across the line. The top secret mission is exposed after team members are accused of executing the double agent. It is believed that Terry McIntosh is the youngest soldier to serve with the Green Berets on an "A" team and earn the coveted Combat Badge. This is his story about the transition from boy to man in the jungles of Vietnam where he met himself for the first time with a sense of shame and honor.
ABOUT THE YOUNGEST GREEN BERET: TERRY MCINTOSH. DOB 01.16.1950
During the Vietnam war, the average age of a Special Forces soldier was between 30 and 35 years old. SF lowered the minimum age requirement from 20 to 18 to fill critical positions if they scored high enough on a physical training test and met other requirements.
At age 17, Terry McIntosh was serving with an elite long range patrol unit in Germany. Although strictly a volunteer unit, SF sought out Terry McIntosh for a permanent assignment and issued a full flash Green Beret (the 1968 standard), He did not volunteer but accepted the assignment. He was 18 years old when selected and one of the youngest to ever serve with SF. He was highly trained in three military skills, airborne qualified in two countries, and met SF mental and physical requirements. He would later earn the Vietnamese jump wings, making it three countries qualified.
At age 18, he was trusted to handle top secret intelligence gathering information and eventually assisted members of Project Gamma, a covert operation running secret ops into Cambodia. Additionally, he participated in air assault and river boat operations while commanding dozens of ambush patrols. He was medevac off the Nui Coto Mountain range due to a severe illness but returned to his team after recovery.
At age 19, he became the youngest soldier to serve on an operational A-team and earn the Combat Badge for personally engaging the enemy in ground combat. As a Specialist E-4, Terry filled the team slot reserved for a seasoned E-7. SF promoted him to Sergeant, commended him for extraordinary service, and wanted him to extend his assignment. He elected to return to his former LRP outfit which by then was stateside and reforged as Co. A, 75th Rangers.
After the war was over, the average age of an SF soldier went back up to thirty for a reason. The maturity level sought in candidates is rare in someone younger. SF and other special operation teams like the Army Rangers and Navy Seals are distinguished by a willingness to fight to the death in a spearhead role. Physical conditioning and multiple skills are required.
