Wild animals have always been considered a symbol of freedom, strength, and natural beauty. However, hidden beneath this picturesque image lies a dark reality – the immense suffering experienced by these creatures. The moral and political problem of wild animal suffering is an issue that deserves our attention. In this article, we will delve into the reasons behind wild animal suffering, explore the ethical questions it raises, and discuss potential political solutions to address this pressing concern.

The Reality of Wild Animal Suffering

Many people are unaware of the extent of suffering that exists in the natural world. In the wild, animals face numerous challenges and hardships, including hunger, disease, predation, extreme weather conditions, and competition for resources. Additionally, natural selection can be brutal, favoring traits that lead to increased suffering rather than well-being. These factors combined create a cycle of struggle and pain for wild animals.

For instance, a lioness may spend days searching for food, often in vain. When successful, she must tear apart her prey while it is still alive, leading to a gruesome death for the unfortunate victim. Similarly, parasites and diseases can inflict excruciating pain on wild animals, weakening and eventually killing them. These examples barely scratch the surface of the immense suffering that pervades the natural world.

The Ethical Dilemma

The existence of wild animal suffering poses a moral conundrum. If we value the well-being and reduction of suffering for sentient beings, as we rightly do for domesticated animals, should we not extend the same consideration to wild animals?

One argument against intervening in wild animal suffering is the idea of "naturalness." Some claim that interfering with the natural course of evolution and ecosystems is ethically wrong, as it goes against the principles of nature. However, this argument fails to acknowledge that humans have already significantly altered natural ecosystems, often causing immense suffering for wild animals through activities such as deforestation or pollution.

Moreover, wild animal suffering is not limited to natural causes but also includes human-induced suffering, such as habitat destruction and climate change. In this light, it becomes evident that our moral responsibility extends to minimizing the suffering inflicted upon wild animals, regardless of whether it arises from natural or human causes.

Political Solutions

To address the moral and political problem of wild animal suffering, various solutions have been proposed:

1. Ecological Engineering

Ecological engineering involves modifying ecosystems to reduce suffering and enhance well-being. For example, wildlife corridors can be established to facilitate safe migration, avoiding potentially dangerous areas where animals face a higher risk of suffering. Additionally, reintroducing predators can help control disease outbreaks or overpopulation, which can lead to increased suffering.

2. Conservation Efforts

Protecting and preserving natural habitats is crucial in minimizing wild animal suffering. By conserving ecosystems and preventing habitat destruction, we can provide animals with a stable environment where they can thrive and reduce their vulnerability to suffering.

3. Animal Welfare Research

Funding research into understanding and mitigating wild animal suffering is imperative to finding effective solutions. By investing in this field, politicians and policymakers can make informed decisions and develop strategies tailored to the specific needs of wild animals.

4. Public Awareness and Education

Increasing public awareness about the issue of wild animal suffering can generate support for political action. Through educational campaigns, we can spark conversations, promote empathy, and ultimately influence policymakers to prioritize the well-being of wild animals.

The moral and political problem of wild animal suffering demands our attention and action. While the issue of wild animal suffering is complex, it is our collective responsibility to minimize the suffering experienced by sentient beings, be they domesticated or wild. By understanding the reality of wild animal suffering, recognizing the ethical dilemmas it presents, and implementing political solutions, we can strive towards a future where the welfare and reduction of suffering for all sentient beings, including wild animals, is given the importance it deserves.

Though many ethicists have the intuition that we should leave nature alone, Kyle Johannsen argues that we have a duty to research safe ways of providing large-scale assistance to wild animals. Using concepts from moral and political philosophy to analyze the issue of wild animal suffering (WAS), Johannsen explores how a collective, institutional obligation to assist wild animals should be understood. He claims that with enough research, genetic editing may one day give us the power to safely intervene without perpetually interfering with wild animals’ liberties.

Questions addressed include:

  • In what way is nature valuable and is intervention compatible with that value?
  • Is intervention a requirement of justice?
  • What are the implications of WAS for animal rights advocacy? What types of intervention are promising?

Expertly moving the debate about human relations with wild animals beyond its traditional confines, Wild Animal Ethics is essential reading for students and scholars of political philosophy and political theory studying animal ethics, environmental ethics, and environmental philosophy.
