1-1 Purpose. This document is a guide to executing Advanced Marksmanship Training at the Company and Battalion level for the majority of Light Infantry Division weapon systems. In this guide a series of menus or POIs are defined in order to allow Commanders the flexibility of choosing a marksmanship program that fits their units mission focus and training level. This document also includes Tasks, Conditions, and Standards, a PMI program, and planning considerations for executing marksmanship densities.

1-2 General. The procedures and techniques for implementing a marksmanship-training program are based on the concept that all soldiers must understand common firing principles, be proficient marksmen, and be confident in their firing skill and equipment in combat. This depends on their understanding of the weapon and correct application of marksmanship fundamentals. Proficiency is accomplished through practice that is supervised by qualified leaders and through objective performance assessments. During preliminary training, trainers emphasize initial learning, reviewing, reinforcing and practicing of the basics. Soldiers must master weapons maintenance, functions and checks, and firing fundamentals before progressing to advanced skills and firing exercises under tactical conditions. The skills the Soldier must learn are developed in the following four phases:

I. Preliminary Marksmanship Instruction (Day, Night, SRM).
II. Known Distance Firing.
III. Transition Firing (Day, Night).
IV. Culmination in a “Combat Fire Qualification”.

The intent of marksmanship is to develop marksmanship skills that allow a Soldier to maximize the capabilities of the weapon systems available. This means that a Soldier must hit whatever he can see and must be just as effective at night as during the day, under combat stress.

This marksmanship program differs from the Army standard found in Field Manuals. Light Infantry Units will fight at night, in an urban environment under extremely stressful conditions. Units must train how they will fight. As a result of this philosophy will enable units to win in any situation. The program is centered on four parts (for most weapon systems); Day Qualification, Night Qualification, Combat Stress, and finally a focus toward unit Commander Intent, whether it is Short-Range Marksmanship, Long Range Marksmanship, or Mounted Marksmanship.
