Selborne, a picturesque village nestled in the South Downs National Park, has a rich history that stretches back centuries. One of its most notable inhabitants was Gilbert White, a renowned naturalist and ornithologist who called this quaint village home. Join us on a journey through time as we explore the fascinating history of Selborne and delve into the life and discoveries of Gilbert White.

Early History of Selborne

With evidence of human settlement dating back to the Iron Age, Selborne boasts a long and storied past. Its name is believed to have derived from the Old English words "sele" (meaning house or hall) and "burna" (meaning stream), describing the village's proximity to a nearby stream. Throughout the centuries, Selborne has witnessed various historical events, including the Norman Conquest and the English Civil War.

Gilbert White: A Naturalist Extraordinaire

Gilbert White, born in 1720, was a pioneer in the field of natural history. His lifelong passion for observing and documenting the natural world around him led to the publication of his renowned book, "The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne." This groundbreaking work, first published in 1789, detailed White's observations of plants, animals, and weather patterns in the village and its surrounding areas.

This book is a compilation of the author's letters to other naturalists – Thomas Pennant and Daines Barrington. Some of the letters were never posted, and were written for the book. White's Natural History was at once well received by contemporary critics and the public, and continued to be admired by a diverse range of nineteenth and twentieth century literary figures. His work has been seen as an early contribution to ecology and in particular to phenology. The book has been enjoyed for its charm and apparent simplicity, and the way that it creates a vision of pre-industrial England.
